Edward Paul
Winning two silver medals at NSW Fencing’s Peter Witkop Shield earlier this year, Doonside’s Edward Paul hopes to close the year on a high with more wins at the Friendship Team Cup in December.
Receiving a gold medal at the international championship last year in the under-11-boys category, the St John Vianney’s student, 12, hopes to replicate that result and hold on to his NSW top-four ranking.
The star fencer has a host of extra-curricular activities including scouts, swimming, chess, acting and debating, and said discipline and movement fed his love for the sport.
The 12 year-old is aiming for a win at the Friendship Team Cup in December.
“I first saw it at the Medieval Fayre when I was little and decided I was going to do it when I was old enough,” he said. “Fencing can also take me into movie and theatrical productions so it’s not just a competitive sport but a way into other opportunities as well.”
Edward fractured his elbow recently and his mother Svetlana Paul said he still trained over the 10-week healing period.
“It’s an incredibly disciplined sport and often all about perfecting the tiniest movements like hand position, sabre grip and footwork,” Ms Paul said. “He never complains, is never bored or frustrated … it’s never a struggle to get him to training.”
Edward is the latest Junior Sports Star nominee for the Advocate’s Local Sports Star awards which close on August 31.
