Our Year 3 students recently kicked off the school day with a BANG as part of their science incursion, spending the whole day conducting various experiments alongside Ranger Jamie and Ranger Sid who ran the incursion.

We started the day by learning about heat; we watched Ranger Jamie demonstrate how heat would pop a balloon and how adding fire into rocket fuel would create a gas, which would then create heat.

Following on from this, students split up into groups and moved onto the grass area where they competed in the ‘Science Olympics’ with Ranger Sid. The Science Olympics involved forming two groups to go head-to-head in answering questions about the states of matter, the other half of Year 3 learned about the density of water in comparison to oil, this was demonstrated by having oil float to the top of a bottle of water. When mentos were added to the liquid, it caused a reaction which created heat and bubbles.

Next up was the ice challenge where we worked in groups to try and melt a piece of ice the fastest. Year 3 quickly realised that stomping on the ice was the quickest way to do it due to the friction that this caused.

As the day drew to a close, Year 3 moved on to creating slime. Students worked with Ranger Sid and Ranger Jamie to use cornflour and water, which produced slime. We then created rockets using bicarb soda and vinegar which caused our rockets to expand and shoot up into the sky.

To finish off the day Year 3 took a group photo with their new scientist friends and went home exhausted from all of the action-packed learning!
